Freelancing is nice because it offers freedom, but it is a long and hard road. I've been doing it since my 7-year-old was born so that I could be there for her mentally and emotionally when she needed me.
Financially, it has been a constant cycle of feast/famine. Its exhausting, but as the primary caregiver of a small child, I needed to have flexibility.
Recently, I accepted an offer for the dream job. I am 100% remote and the hours are part-time. I work when I want and where I want other than weekly mandatory meetings. I can pick up extra work when my daughter is at camp or school, and I can spend the afternoons with her when she isn't. The stable pay and ability to budget my money after 7 long years of instability is a huge relief.
I like that The Great Resignation is forcing employers to rethink how they hire and retain employees. But I do worry that many of the new freelancers are going to learn the grass isn't actually greener and will return to work before the changes we really need are enacted.
