Writing for larger publications and speaking at events are possibilities for fiction authors, but there aren't really a lot of opportunities for this like there are for non-fiction. Building trust and authority through recognized channels is just harder to do as a fiction writer because you need to get people to fall in love with your characters and stories as opposed to establishing yourself as an authority in your field.
